Vandkrystaller til insekter

Hvad er vandkrystaller?

Ordet “vandkrystaller” er en populærbetegnelse for en polymér, der fås i krystalliseret form eller som “perler” i forskellige størrelser. Krystallernes vigtigste egenskab er, at de kan opsuge vand. 

Vandkrystaller bruges i mange sammenhænge. Du kender dem sikkert fra f.eks. baby-bleer, hvor deres sugende egenskab udnyttes til at holde babyen tør. Hvis du river en tør ble i stykker, vil du finde en portion af disse plymérer.

Du kender dem også fra små poser, som ligger sammen med mange varer, som skal holdes tørre. F.eks. i en kasse med fodtøj eller elektronik. Vandkrystaller bruges også som jordforbedring, hvor de kan hjælpe med at fastholde vandet i jorden. 

Det spændende ved vandkrystaller er, at de kan opsuge vand, svarende til 100-150 gange deres egen vægt! Krystallerne ændrer sig gradvist til gelé, efterhånden som de opsuger vandet.

Hvorfor bruge vandkrystaller til insekter?

Hvis du holder insekter ved du sikkert, at de er meget tilbøjelige til at drukne, hvis de blot tilbydes vand i en skål. Hvis man i stedet præsenterer dem for en vandholdig gelé, kan de drikke derfra uden risiko for at drukne. Det er smart!

Er vandkrystallerne giftige for insekter?

Vandkrystaller er et kemisk produkt, og hvis insekterne skal bruges som mad eller foder, er det givetvis ikke optimalt, at insekterne spiser kemi. Men det gør de heldigvis heller ikke.

De suger blot vandet fra geléen, som så skrumper tilsvarende. Selve vandkrystallerne bliver altså tilbage, og kan tilsættes yderligere vand, efterhånden som der bliver drukket fra krystallerne. 

Fordele ved vandkrystaller

Vandkrystaller har en del fordele frem for traditionelle måder at tilbyde vand til insekter. En af de store fordele er, at krystallerne ikke er organiske. Vandgelé vil derfor ikke være så tilbøjelig til at udvikle svamp og råd.

Det er også meget billigt. Et enkelt gram vandkrystal (som kun koster en krone eller to) vil kunne give 1-1,5 deciliter gelé. 

Alternativer til vandkrystaller

Hvis du ikke bryder dig om at tilbyde kemi til dine insekter, er der heldigvis andre alternativer. Ofte kan du blot nøjes med at tilbyde insekterne frugt eller grøntsager, som de kan spise/drikke fra.

Du kan også bruge “væge-princippet”, hvor du via et stykke stof trækker fugt ud til insekterne, uden at de risikerer at drukne. Brug f.eks. en plastbøtte med låg, hvor der er lavet et rundt hul i låget. Fyld bøtten med vand, og stik en væge ned i hullet, bestående af en stramt sammenrullet klud, som udfylder hele hullet. Nu kan insekterne så drikke fra den del af kluden, der stikker op fra bøtten.
