Friday october 7th an experiment between two different artistic orientations was set into motion with a performance at Aalborg Symphony' s premises. The first prototype of this audio-visual collaboration for some people opened the eyes to classic music and for others it gave a new way of sensing the symphonic experience they already knew. One thing was certain - there was something to talk about.

The Aalborg Symphony has since 1943 been part of enriching the musical life of Aalborg. The orchestra consists of 65 professional classical musicians who have been conducted by the English conductor Rumon Gamba since september 2011. For the Symphony the hope and idea with the collaboration with Platform4 was to explore new ways of presenting and experiencing classical music, and at the same to reach a younger audience not as familiar with classical music.

Ebba Bertelsen, Deputy Manager at Aalborg Symphony Orchestra:
"We think it went really well and it was great to see so many people for the first concert - despite the fact that the concept is completely new.
It was very positive that the collaboration between Platform4 and Aalborg Symphony Orchestra came to a good start, and we look forward to seeing how the visual arts can develop regarding symphonic concerts. We are looking forward to the upcoming event and hope that the "VS.-concerts" in general can become a breeding ground for future collaboration between Aalborg Symphony and Platform4 - maybe something new and even bigger."

For Kristian who is one of the managers at Platform4 and an audio-visual art nerd the request from the Symphony was a positive challenge and a possible adventure - imagine to have a symphonic orchestra to play with! So he gathered a group of versatile local artists and designers who would gladly accept the challenge.
Sandro Masai - a Brazilian dancer, performer and visual artist; Karina Abramova - a Russian/Latvian visual artist; and Morten Jensen - a Danish industrial designer and lecturer at University College Nordjylland - teamed up with Kristian and remixed their competences in a production that included physical setup, 2D/3D projection (video/animation), mapping and live VJ'ing. With great help from a group of Platformers the first concert was established.

"VS. is an extraordinary and artistically experimental concept to be a part of: To create the visual frame for the magnificent music performed by more than 50 super skilled musicians is a great learning experience and an artistic blessing.
For the first showcase in September a lot of time was put on getting the production up and running, and during the concert we realized that the realistic storytelling for this kind of huge human setup is maybe too realistic and concrete. But our general feeling is excitement of the challenge and the great potential.
For the next show October 12th we have more time to experiment with the visual content and the physical space - so we can guarantee a whole different experience - with new wierd ideas and visual content shaping. We want to challenge the spectators, and each VS.-concert should be an extreme experience. For the next VS.-concert people won't only be surprised in the concert hall… But we wont reveal anything yet :)"
- Morten, Kristian, Karina and Sandro agrees loudly.

The next VS.-experiment will take place October 12th at The Symphony.
